Tiny Houses and the Black Experience
How can Tiny Homes be re-introduced to benefit Black Baltimoreans?
A Masters Project led by Mr. Justin Fair, MCRP (Spring 2020) with Morgan State University. With an emphasis on Baltimore’s Black (African-American) population, the research summarizes historical concerns, identifies groups for which tiny houses are an appropriate housing solution, and documents neighborhood indicators for or against their application. Based upon a survey of recent literature and a compilation of local questionnaires, the research reviews cultural attitudes towards tiny houses.
Body of Research
- 173-page thesis studies multiple factors that invite or discourage tiny housing in Baltimore
- Explores what verbal and design-related messages speak to disadvantaged and minority populations on a cultural basis
- Chapter 5 contains land use proposals, rubrics, and primer to better frame strategies
Methods
The research employs a qualitative, ethnographic methods approach to record the sentiments of Baltimore City residents, comparing their feelings on tiny homes with the traditional housing stock. Join the Maryland Tiny House Coalition Mailing List, organized by Mr. Justin Fair, to better shepherd resources across Maryland to advocate for tiny homes across jurisdictions. Plan for a quarterly field trip, happy hour, workshop, or webinar to drive one of the next-steps described in the project. The slidedeck is best accompanied with a live presentation, so stay tuned for the next listening session or webinar.
